6 Dimensions of Wellness: Physical

Physical wellness allows us to take care of our body, but not limited to healthy eating and regular exercise. Consider your body as a whole. According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or immunity.

You should know your limits and how far you can push them, not just for eating and exercising daily. Perfect example: as men we want to be macho and show off the to others that we don’t need a hat and gloves when it’s freezing outside. After a couple of days, we get the sniffle and then get sick. (Not all of us are like this but some.) Sometimes we don’t know how far we can push our limits without knowing the consequences. After a hard-hitting lesson, we learn. However, was there anyway we could have known about consequences that would have an affect on our physical, emotional, and social wellness? Be open-minded. I’ve mentioned this in previous blog posts and will repeat it throughout my posts in the future. You have to be open-minded and protective of your body because it will keep you alive 24/7.

Know your health numbers such as BMI (body mass index), cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and sugar levels. Many of us don’t care to ask our primary healthcare providers on how our progress should be in terms of healthy progress and development. Click here if you want to calculate your BMI to see your current measure of body fat. When your health numbers are in good standing, you will feel better about yourself and encourage yourself on how to improve on those qualities that need more work. Perhaps you have high blood pressure and want to try yoga and meditation. If so, check out my post on benefits of yoga for more information. As mentioned previously, know your body limits and how far you can push them for a better and healthier lifestyle.

Take it one step at a time.

Develop intellectual curiosity on how you can live a healthier life. Yes, it is important to consider healthy foods and learn about their impact on your ENTIRE body right now and long term. Make a list of simple exercises you can do at work for a regular routine.

  • At work, you can stretch your hands and toes while sitting on your office chair.
  • Take a walk around the building during lunch and/or break time. Bring comfortable shoes to change into during the exercise.
  • For those that have jobs where you stand on your feet all day, don’t be afraid to stretch your arms out and behind your back, touch your toes, and do a couple of sit-ups. If not at a desk, I’m sure there is a supply closet to get at least 2-3 sit-ups in your daily routine.
  • Laugh a little at work or in your car. If you work in a soulless environment, step out to your car and laugh about something. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies.

Physical wellness questions you should ask yourself:

  1. Do I know important health numbers?
  2. Do I avoid using tobacco products?
  3. Do I get annual physical exams?
  4. AM I ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO MY HEALTHCARE PROVIDER? (ie:- what can I do to improve my daily intake? Are there warning signs I should look for in all 4 seasons of the year? Should I be cautious of all over-the-counter medications when I get sick?)
  5. Do I get sufficient amount of sleep? A good amount of sleep contributes to our overall attitude toward ourselves and others for the near and far future. Keep tabs on your sleeping pattern such as where you fall asleep, how long, and what you wear.

A true healthcare provider will be honest to you for question #4. If you have any doubts, try to do some research online but DO NOT BE YOUR OWN DOCTOR if you haven’t graduated from medical school. Please seek second and/or third opinions because it is your OVERALL health. Your health is no joke. Take it seriously. Seriously!

Be safe. Be healthy. Exercise regularly. Watch out for warning signs by knowing what your body can and cannot handle.

Remember to inhale…exhale.
